Today at work I got to see part of the SIGGRAPH 2010 Electronic Theater. It's a collection of the best CG short films of the year.
This one by Daihei Shibata was my favorite. Watch it full screen if you can.

Date: 2010-08-28 06:22 am (UTC)I used to be able to play that piano piece. :)
My dad would sometimes bring home movies of SIGGRAPH shorts back when he worked at Microsoft, always really cool to watch.

Date: 2010-08-28 05:31 pm (UTC)I might see if I'm allowed to sign out the whole video, because I only got to see about half of it. I looked up the titles of all the shorts online when I was trying to find this one, and there were a lot of others that looked good too.
I can't remember if I learned this exact piano piece but I did take piano. How far did you get with it?

Date: 2010-08-28 05:57 pm (UTC)I took piano lessons from when I was about 4 or 5 to the end of 10th grade. I was never all that into it, unfortunately. Mostly went because my mom really wanted me to (her whole family is massively into classical music, she plays some piano and was a dj at a classical music radio station for a while). I could technically play pretty well, but I was a bit annoyed because my teachers wouldn't teach me any music theory, classical music was never really my thing, and I couldn't get emotionally into much of what I was playing. This piece was one of the ones I liked, though. Debussy is neat. I think it was one of the last ones I learned.
How long did you take piano?

I liked it but shashigai had to take it too and he didn't, he really wanted to learn violin instead but he wasn't allowed.
That really sucks. :( Did he ever get to learn it?

Aww man, if only there was some way to go back in time and trade this stuff!

A little bit. But bad things happened. I don't know if I'm supposed to be talking about that, it's his story.

Date: 2010-08-28 10:39 am (UTC)And I love that music. I really love debussy. Then I was trying to remember which piece it was by him. Got it! Claire de lune. Mum loves piano and used to play it. We grew up tinkling on her piano *smiles* And now she listens to piano music a lot :-)
found this while checking I had the right one. Violin and piano *smiles*

Date: 2010-08-28 05:23 pm (UTC)It reminds me of being at my aunts' and uncle's houses that we visited when I was twelve. We had one of those nature CD's that plays classical pieces along with sounds like loons and crickets. I used to play it when I was drawing and working on computer game design. I keep trying to get that feeling back but it's not working very well.

Date: 2010-08-29 03:02 am (UTC)I love the way in classical music how pieces originally written for one instrument are traded and adapted to others. But then to play it in the instrument it was originally written for can be like discovering it all over again.
We used to have a cd like that too except it was australian birds and insects etc. (Never heard a loon, in spite of Loon being my nickname all through my childhood and even when older as well.)
For me that cd was like opening my eyes in the morning to a canvas tent above me, early sun shining through, Knowing I am totally out in the middle of nowhere *smiles*
