So much to write about. Pages and pages and pages of notes.
First things first, because everything else hinges on this.
Monetizing cristal.
Cristal being the same thing as in crystal kifu. After sitting through a presentation on Final Fantasy: Crystal Mythos solely because of the name, and getting blasted by its teeth-grinding sugar high artwork, I cannot talk about “crystal” with a straight face.
The ethics of monetizing cristal. That is to say, profiteering from other people's pain.
There is a lot of feeling and misconception that surrounds anything to do with cristal, both at home on Ua and here. However, if you look at it from a neutral scientific perspective, cristal is simply a manifestation of knots in the fabric of reality. It is already studied that if one maps the connections between people, happiness is not evenly distributed. It tends to spread contagiously among friends and acquaintances. Ill health and trauma clump together the same way. They capture and block energy, which compresses along the same principles as a black hole, until sometimes it reaches a critical threshold and gets released.
In places where magic is stronger, the compressed energy takes material form in the mineral I call cristal, but it certainly doesn't need to manifest physically here on Earth in order to be detected the same way.
At any rate, it is the heritage of my family to profit from the creation of kifu. Genies, djinn, human batteries, call them what you will. I am the first to have even limited success in looking for alternatives. Hence my interest in cristal, which is neither alive nor bound to any individual, so it sidesteps the kifu dilemma of needing to contain a living human being. Now that we on Ua cannot return to using kifu in the way we have in the past, it becomes even more important that we find alternate sources of energy.
And yet – it is a mark of extreme ugliness on Earth to use cristal energy for commercial profit. That would be what we call Jerry Springer, or Dr. Phil, or any other media venue in which people's suffering is paraded in front of millions in order to take advantage of the public's instinct to ogle a train wreck. Pain makes for good entertainment... but hiding and minimizing pain for dignity's sake also leeches the soul out of a story.
I am a profiteer at heart. When I see untapped energy, my first thought is how to use it. Despite the common misconception that commerce is inherently corrupt, it has brought unprecedented technological advances to this world, and the subsequent global improvement in quality of life. The fact that I am aware of what I'm doing does not change the inherent worth or lack of worth of my actions. However, I am also aware of my history, and the harm I and my ancestors caused by mismanaging energy. I do not wish to repeat these mistakes in a new form. At the same time, it would be a grievous sin to let a potentially life-improving resource lie fallow because I was too risk-averse to seize it.
I will go ahead with my plans to channel cristal, unless I receive radical new information that proves it to be a bad idea. However I invite discussion from anybody who has something to say.

Date: 2010-03-13 09:06 pm (UTC)Yeah there can be stuff in the middle, too. I mean I don't know a whole lot of musicians who only do happy stuff, there's like some crazy amount of musicians out there who sing about all sorts of angsty shit and nobody thinks that's a bad ugly thing. I mean most of the time, I think. Maybe it's because singing can be kinda therapeutic for the person doing it so it's not just like people going nuts on Jerry Springer with everybody watching them, so unless you wind up like Elliott Smith or something, it can be good for everybody?
