Tarot: Ace of Coins

I'm back to working on the Karnese Tarot project. I'm not sure why this is calling me so much more strongly than the 3d character modeling project did. Maybe it's just easier on the brain - painting is much more focused than 3d work, where you keep needing to jump between aggressive experimentation (to learn the software), visual eye (to make it look good), technical fiddling (to figure out which tools to use for what), and the big picture (because otherwise it's very easy to waste time on detail that's never actually seen). Maybe it's because it's all soft skills. Maybe because the pressure's off.

I'm still going to keep working towards 3d, but meanwhile here is another tarot painting.



The meaning of the card (coins and pentacles are equivalent)

He is tiroth, who are jungle folk and crafters. Also very easily distracted by pretty shiny colourful things. :)

I noticed while I was working on this, how similar the composition was to a pen-and-ink I did six years ago. It was my "before" therapy drawing. The first session, he asked me to draw where I currently stood, what had brought me to therapy. I said I'd already done it and after resistance made my hands pull out the sketchbook and show him.



It is striking how the shape of inspiration has changed.

XD I've been delaying commenting here because I feel like I should have something more intelligent to say other than "ooooh, I like it!" about the tarot painting, but for some reason I am having the hardest time finding any other words than that.

About the second drawing- I am really impressed by your ability to get across intense emotion through art. It's one of the things I've been worrying about lately, that exposure anxiety will trip me up and keep me from being able to draw some of the more emotional parts of my stories well enough.

Heh, none of us commented yet coz we wanted to have enough headspace to really take our time and look at it and think and feel about it, then find the words to relay that to you.

Ok, so what strikes me (don't ask me who I am tonight! I am confused myself :-P)
is that the meaning you linked to is really very different to the sense I got when I was looking/feeling the card before I checked out the meaning.

I felt like s/he had found something incredibly precious and was like framing it with their hands with that sort of wonder and awe you get when you find something precious. Like when you have an epiphany.

I wouldn't have thought of it as being in primary colours, because to me that is a reddish brown and a brownish green and soft and muted. I think of primaries as bold and attention-grabbing.
I find that the precious find is found in the ground really important. Shamanically, that is really significant. Earth as an element, and also earth as in the physical world. To be finding meaning in the physical realities of life. To understand the value of being grounded.
But then you have the spiral of life and energy above. I think it is very balanced. It isn't grounding in a heavy way, but balanced. And the person is there in between it all. Their focus on the heart in the earth but their life/the heart/their world lit from above. Well ok, maybe not literally in your painting so much as the light seems more to be coming from the heart (Which is really gorgeous I reckon :-), but the overall painting is lit from "spirit" in the spiral above.

Yeah, now how is that for waxing lyrical!

I don't think the second painting is "better" or "worse" they are different is all :-)
